One 04:28
One First we were two Two within one Now we are two Trying to join As One Again But still we are one As we came in as one We try to be two But always So we go out and on As one To join with the larger one But what happens in the in-between Between you and me? We try to make the two become one When in the end we remain as one We leave as one To join again with the larger one We'll never know What happens then All we have Is here and now So take my hand Right here, right now Hold me closer Right here, right now For this is all we have This is all we know This is all we'll ever know This, right here, right now This, right here, right now

Open 04:03
Open I want to touch you I want to know you I want to hold you I want to love you Let's come together Join together And watch the world Float away... There is no you There is no me Just one, just one Infinite Totality The moment comes when this too end and you and I fall back apart Afraid again To stay alone And so we crumble Bit by bit The love we that we create together Tear down bridges Build up walls So terrified to be alone We destroy the very love we crave So in the end We replicate The very state We would avoid... But I I choose I choose to keep trying Trying to stay open To keep choosing love To keep choosing you And in the face of all that's passed between you and me How do I keep staying open? How do we keep staying open? staying open staying open staying open staying open...

Never Know 03:11
Never Know These days Right here In the sunshine Are precious These hours Right here In the moonlight Are rare Each moment Is never repeated Is never, ever repeated We waste the minutes We sleep right through Marking time Holding back, and Waiting, waiting waiting.... while life is slipping away.... Where will we go? We don't know, We can never know. Where will we go? We don't know, We can never know....

What Will You Do? No matter how I hold you close The questions Never go away No matter how short Our time may be Our lives are all we have. The's no excuse for shutting down But we still give up all the same And watch the time Trickle away Slipping by Trickling away What will you do While you hold the pain of your heart in your hands? What will you do While the time Goes rolling by What will you do while your life goes drifting by? What will you do? What will I do? What can we do? What will we do?

Right Here, Right Now I don't have Any answers All I've got Is more questions And the questions Just seem to create Even more questions I don't get Any resolution Just another day And another way To try and find Another path That leads me to More questions I don't have Any good reasons To choose life There are No good reasons There never were... I have no more dreams As the days go by I have no more ideals As the years go by All I've got Right now Is now Right here Right now And then there is you And then there is me You and me Right here, right now Take my hand Right here right now This is what we've got Right here, right now You and I Our hands entwined Right here, right now I choose you Right here, right now I choose love Right here, right now I choose this (this, this) Right here, right now Right here, right now Right here, right now...

Calling You 05:16
Calling You A desert road from Vegas to nowhere It's someplace better than where you've been A coffee machine that needs some fixing In a little cafe just around the bend I am calling you – can't you hear me I am calling you A hot dry wind blows right thru me The baby's crying and I can't sleep But I can feel a change is coming Coming closer sweet release I am calling you – I know you hear me I am calling you I'm gonna walk through the desert to find you Gonna leave behind the only life I know Cause there's a place for hearts that need fixing A little cafe with a magic show

about

I wrote the songs for That Was Then, This Is Now knowing that the EP would be the prelude to my forthcoming album Songs of S + D. I was meditating on circularity, connectivity, and time, and I wanted to create a three-part body of works where the past refers the future, the future refers to the past, and present contains all time. So, even though That Was Then, This Is Now is the prelude EP, it actually functions as the epilogue, coalescing the themes that I envisioned in the content of Songs of S + D.

The lyrics, content, and message of the songs are direct, clear, and heartfelt, addressing universal questions that we’ve been grappling with throughout time. The songs are then presented in modern context through the technology of electronic music and my own personal spin on how I combine electro-acoustic, electronic instruments, beats, and processing, with my voice as the connector throughout the songs.

Each song was recorded in one take with my playing all the instruments, doing the effects processing, and singing at the same time. There’s no edits, no auto-tune. The a-ha moments of beauty in art come from the juxtaposition of seeming perfection against the imperfection of human gesture and life. We are at our most beautiful when we can share the full totality of ourselves and our expression, without trying to erase away our individual quirks and seeming flaws that make us each of us beautiful and unique.

My songs address questions for which there are no easy answers. In creating musical moments to sit with these questions, not to find linear answers but to experience a space of inquiry and uncover what is revealed in that process, I hope offers the listener the opportunity to resonate with these moments of revealing for themselves in their own lives, and in the experience, find some emotional touching that offers not answers but communion, community, kinship, and release.
