In the Sea” is equally inspired by Ringo Starr’s “Octopus’ Garden” and Shakespeare Prospero sonnet from The Tempest, reimagining a father and daughter’s fraught relationship transformed by a magical kingdom deep in the ocean. A re-working of Sir Thomas Moore madrigal ends the song with a transcendent, psychedelic coda.
lyrics
In the Sea (Full Fathom Five)
One day, we’ll live down
In the sea,
You and me,
In harmony
Spending our days so happily
Frolicking among the fish and
Playing hide and seek
Amidst the coral's lacy trails
I’ll pluck some pearls
To bejewel my hair
A ring of shells to
Crown your head and
A mighty triton for your hand
We’ll carve two thrones
From the rocky reefs
Where we'll sit by side
The gentle waves lap golden warm
We’ll splash and laze about each day
And when the moon lights
Up the sky, we'll make our
Sandy beds, and sleep so
Peacefully
Enjoying each other’s
Company
Far better than when we were
Distant mortals on the land
One day, we’ll live down
In the sea,
In the sea,
In the sea,
In the sea,
In the sea…
One day, we’ll live down
In the sea,
In the sea,
In the sea,
In the sea,
In the sea…
[Full fathom five thy father lies
Of his bones are coral made
Those are pearls that were his
Eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes…
—William Shakespeare, The Tempest]
